MORE ON FINDING THE RIGHT SCALE
Choosing Scale + Placement
The right size is less about filling a wall and more about how you want to experience the photograph within the space.
Smaller works create a more intimate viewing experience, while larger editions have greater presence and can be experienced from farther across a room. A Pairing or group of photographs can also create scale through the relationship between multiple works.
When considering placement, a few measurements provide useful starting points:
- 57–60 inches from the floor to the center of the framed work is a comfortable eye level in many spaces.
- 6–8 inches above furniture is a good starting point when hanging photography above a sofa, bed, console or credenza.
- 2–3 inches between frames allows a Pairing or group to feel connected while giving each photograph its own space.
These are guidelines rather than rules. Architecture, furniture, viewing distance and the photograph itself should ultimately determine what feels right. Negative space can be just as important as the size of the work.
